Camp Mom Craziness

Every time I get into my car, I get a notification on my phone telling me exactly how many minutes it will take me to get to Amesbury.  I don’t know why it keeps happening… or why it’s presuming, almost two weeks after the last day of camp, that Amesbury is where I want to be.  I spent eight unforgettable weeks of my summer at 17 Old County Road, but then I packed up and said goodbye just like everyone else.

So what’s with the subliminal messages?

The other day I went to Costco.  On the drive home (after another electronic reminder of my distance to Amesbury), I called Erica.  I told her I’d walked up and down the aisles feeling like a Conehead from Saturday Night Live.  Nothing made sense, and I was sure it was obvious to all the other customers that I wasn’t one of them.

This is what I wanted to explain to (scream at) all of them:

Where I come from, when we hear a song we love, we stop whatever we’re doing, jump up on the nearest chair, and sing it out at the top of our lungs.  We don’t hum it politely.  We don’t just let it play in our heads.  OMG… SING THE SONG!!!

Where I come from, if you see a ball, you throw it.  Through a rafter.  To a friend.  Into a net.  Onto a roof.  Or a shutter.  You never, ever leave a ball just sitting there.  OMG… THROW THE BALL!!!

Where I come from, kids wear t-shirts that are six sizes too big because a counselor who had the honor of being a Captain or Chief Judge knew how much it would mean to the little boy on his team or in his bunk to have it.  OMG… YES, MY SON IS WEARING SHORTS UNDER THERE!  AT LEAST I THINK HE IS…

Where I come from, wars are fought and won under the lights, on a sacred piece of land called the A Diamond.  But once in a great while, when it’s too close to call, it all comes down to a vicious battle of Plays and Songs.  YES, PLAYS AND SONGS.  ANNA AND ELSA.  KELLY CLARKSON AND JOHN DENVER.  OMG… JUST FORGET IT.

Camp envelops us in a precious, insulated bubble.  Then, at the end of the season, the bubble pops… just like that… and suddenly we find ourselves back in the atmosphere.  It takes time to get acclimated to the air out here.  I am very fortunate that everyone who lives with me gets it.  Two just experienced it alongside me, and the other one remembers it like it was yesterday.  (Actually, he was just there for Alumni Weekend, so he remembers it like it was three days ago.)

Be patient with your boys.  They’re just trying to catch their breaths.

As the summer comes to a screeching halt and the craziness of a new school year is upon us, here are some dates to remember:

September 15th:  Early Enrollment end date.  Every camper who enrolls between now and then gets $300 off his tuition.  This is a hard deadline and will not be extended… NO EXCEPTIONS… so don’t miss out!  Click here for details.

September 24th:  Watch the Pats take on the Texans at the Camp Mom’s house with Ken, Erica, and some of our favorite counselors.  12:30-4pm.  Prospective families welcome!

October 28th:  Bauercrest at the Bruins!  See the B’s take on the L.A. Kings and cheer on your favorite Bauercrest hockey players as they experience “3 Minutes of Fame” on the ice in front of thousands of fans at the Garden!  Space is limited; all skaters must be enrolled for 2018.  Email stacy@bauercrest.org for details.

November 25th:  Bauercrest Reunion.  Time and place TBD.

I also want to share a video montage we showed at the Banquet on the last night of camp.  Some of you may have seen it on Facebook; for those who didn’t, click here to watch.  I hope you enjoy!

As always, if you need anything at all, please don’t hesitate to reach out.  My cell is 781-205-9625.  I’d love to hear how you and your boys are doing!

Last but certainly not least, we want to assure you that we’ve reached out individually to our Houston families to let them know the entire Bauercrest family is keeping them in our thoughts and prayers.

All the best,
Stacy

P.S.  I just picked Max up from a friend’s house and “Party in the U.S.A.” came on the radio.  We rocked out the whole way home, Mess Hall-style.  I cannot tell you how much better I feel.  I think it was another subliminal message telling me I’m going to be okay.  Okay, it’s not so subliminal… the chorus actually says, “I know I’m gonna be okay.”  I believe it.  Even if I am 1 hour and 6 minutes away from Amesbury.
