Class Information and Policies
Lifeguard Training Course
- Students must complete the pre-course session, score at least 80% on all written tests, and successfully demonstrate all Lifeguard Skills and Pass the final lifeguard Scenarios. to pass the Lifeguard Training course. All classes must be attended.
- Minimum age of 15. Swim 300 yards continuously, using these strokes in the following order: 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and stabilization, propellant kick. Rhythmic breathing can be performed either by breathing to the side or front. 100 yards of breaststroke, using a pull, breathe, kick, glide sequence. 100 yards of either front crawl using rhythmic breathing or breaststroke, or a combination. Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
Lifeguard Review Course
- Students must complete the pre-course session, score at least 80% on all written tests, and successfully demonstrate all Lifeguard Skills and Pass the final lifeguard Scenarios. to pass the Lifeguard Training course. All classes must be attended.
- Individuals with a current Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate may participate in the review course.
- Minimum Age of 17
Waterfront Lifeguard Component
- Prerequisite becomes a 550 yard swim instead of the 300 yard swim. Participant will need to pass the Waterfront skills and 25 Question written text with a minimum score of 80%.
W.S.I. Course
- Students must complete the online pre-course session, score at least 80% on all written tests, and successfully demonstrate practice teaching and swimming skills to pass the W.S.I. course. All classes must be attended.
- The WSI course begins with pre-course testing on skills; instructor candidates must be able to demonstrate six strokes (front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and butterfly) and also be able to float for one minute and tread water for one minute at Learn-to-Swim Level 4 ability.
- Instructor candidates must be at least 16 years of age by the course end date. Candidates must complete online pre-course homework prior to the first day the class meets.
- The Water Safety Instructor (WSI) course trains instructor candidates to teach American Red Cross water safety courses, including the six levels of Learn-to- Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics, two levels of Parent and Child Aquatics, three Adult Swim courses, Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety. Instructor candidates will also become familiar with Safety Training for Swim Coaches, Longfellow’s WHALE Tales, and the Water Safety Presentations and will be able to conduct these courses and presentations as well.
Lifeguard Instructor Course
- Candidates must successfully meet the prerequisite requirements and have a good working knowledge of the Lifeguard program to takt this course. Candidates must also score at least 80% on the Lifeguard Instructor written exam and complete all practice teaching assignments. All classes must be attended.
- Instructor candidates must be at least 17 years of age by the course end date. Candidates must show American Red Cross lifeguarding certification and professional-rescuer CPR/AED certification, both of which must be current (not expired) as of the first day of the instructor class. Some equivalent lifeguarding certifications from other training organizations are also acceptable.
- Candidates must pass pre-course testing on skills and knowledge at the beginning of the instructor course.
- Waterfront Lifeguard Instructor – If instructor candidates would like to teach the Waterfront Lifeguard Component, they must have a current Waterfront Certification or take the waterfront component during LGI. Class participants will review these items during the course. If participants would like this certification as part of LGI, there will be an addition fee paid during the course to the American Red Cross for $27 and participant will need to pass the Waterfront skills and 25 Question written text with a minimum score of 80%.
Additional Information
- We do not schedule make up classes. In all of our courses, all scheduled class sessions must be attended. If a class is missed, you must enroll in another course and take the entire course over again. Course dates and times are subject to change at any time.
- Please be certain that you want to take the class before you register. You will be entitled to a refund of your class fees minus $100 fee and the fee paid separately to the Red Cross for the Pre-course session.
- IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ – Certificates are now issued electronically via email link directly from the Red Cross. Instructor Certifications will be available on your Instructor Profile, which you will set up when you register for the Pre-Course.
- The Lifeguard Instructor, and Water Safety Instructor courses require strenuous physical activity. Please be certain that you are capable of this type of activity before registering. If the candidate has asthma or any other condition that may be induced with physical activity be sure to let us know under the notes section of this registration form. Include any information on symptoms and medications and how to administer if needed.

Lifeguard Course (LGT certification plus all Digital Books and camp fees) -$350 – Includes $35 fee to Red Cross for pre-course session
Lifeguard Course Review (LGT certification plus all Digital Books and camp fees) – $250 – Include $27 fee to Red Cross for pre-course session
Waterfront Component (for either Lifeguard Training or Lifeguard Training Review (WLGT certification plus all Digital Books and camp fees) $60 additional fee.
Lifeguard Instructor Course (L.G.I certification plus all Digital Books and camp fees) – $425 – Does NOT include $35 Red Cross for pre-course session
Water Safety Instructor (WSI Certification, plus all Digital Books and camp fees) – $365 – Doest NOT include $35 Red Cross for pre course session
If you would like housing for the week, the fee is an Additional $50 a night, payable to Camp Bauercrest, which will cover housing and breakfast and dinner (Lunch is included in the Course fee)
